2012 marked the year that many non-English language songs have begun to receive airplay. The trend started earlier in the year with Michel Teló from Brazil. His Ai Se Eu Te Pego
took the world by storm making the charts in many countries from Europe to North America. Quite a few other Portuguese language artists have also received airplay, especially on internet radio. Then this summer, PSY hit with his smash Korean pop hit, Gangnam Style
. This song, along with its viral video, has made non-English songs in the United States more acceptable to the mainstream. I look forward to hearing more of them in the future.
With the popularity of downloading songs from the internet, especially iTunes, the length of time between singles for artists has shrunk. Songs are being released in some cases every 2 months to keep the artists' albums on the charts. This has also led to more single songs being purchased and fewer entire albums purchased.
Whether it is a music competition show or a music themed scripted show, more of these songs a hitting the charts all the time. In some cases, the songs sales may even start to generate as much in revenue as the advertising dollars. One thing is for sure, expect to have more music being featured on television shows.
